چکیده

We present new observations of the early X-ray afterglows of the first 27 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) well-observed by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT). The early X-ray afterglows show a canonical behavior, where the light curve broadly consists of three distinct power law segments: (i) an initial very steep decay (∝ t with 3 . α1 . 5) , followed by (ii) a very shallow decay (0.5 . α2 . 1.0), and finally (iii) a somewhat steeper decay (1 . α3 . 1.5). GRB 050410 and GRB 050412 : are they really dark gamma - ray bursts ?

Aims. We present a detailed analysis of the prompt and afterglow emission of GRB 050410 and GRB 050412 detected by Swift for which no optical counterpart was observed. Methods. We analysed data from the prompt emission detected by the Swift BAT and from the early phase of the afterglow obtained by the Swift narrow field instrument XRT. Results. The 15−150 keV energy distribution of the GRB 0504...

The late-time afterglow of the extremely energetic short burst GRB 090510 revisited

Context. The Swift discovery of the short burst GRB 090510 has raised considerable attention mainly because of two reasons: first, it had a bright optical afterglow, and second it is among the most energetic events detected so far within the entire GRB population (long plus short). The afterglow of GRB 090510 was observed with Swift/UVOT and Swift/XRT and evidence of a jet break around 1.5 ks a...

High Energy Afterglow Emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts

We calculate the very high energy (sub-GeV to TeV) inverse Compton emission of GRB afterglows. We argue that this emission provides a powerful test of the currently accepted afterglow model. We focus on two processes: synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission within the afterglow blast wave, and external inverse Compton (EIC) emission which occurs when flare photons (produced by an internal proce...

Jet Breaks in Short Gamma-ray Bursts. Ii. the Collimated Afterglow of Grb 051221a

We report the best evidence to date of a jet break in a short gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow, using Chandra and Swift XRT observations of the X-ray afterglow of GRB 051221A. The combined X-ray light curve, which has three breaks, is similar to those commonly observed in Swift observations of long GRBs. A flat segment of the light curve at 0.1 days after the burst represents the first clear cas...

Testing GRB models with the strange afterglow of GRB 090102

We present the observations of the afterglow of gamma-ray burst GRB 090102. We use optical data taken by the TAROT, REM, GROND, Palomar and NOT telescopes, and X-ray data taken by the XRT instrument on board the Swift spacecraft. This event features an unusual light curve. In X-rays, it presents a very monotonic decrease with no hint of temporal break from 0.005 to 6 days after the burst. In op...
